Choose one Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Pick one - Essay Example They think imaginatively and can perform exercises which other offspring of their age can't and this factor makes issues in social and passionate change of such youngsters. Guardians of such youngsters who are skilled in any sense ought to recognize and comprehend the enthusiastic needs of their kid. Going for boundaries is an exceptionally off-base procedure regularly executed by guardians. It is on the grounds that controlling a youngster harshly and recruiting outside mentors for preparing reason can have negative impacts. The guides or mentors recruited by the guardians can utilize forceful strategies for preparing such capable kids adamantly neglecting their individual inclinations and such an example of instructing can teach overwhelmingly solid sentiments of dismissal and nervousness in the youngster. Rather than prepping of the ability, complete serious controlling regarding recruiting guides who may depend on forceful procedures or exposing the kid to utilize alternatives he /she might not have any desire to utilize, can conceivably destroy any remarkable aptitudes or ability such a youngster may have been brought into the world with. As if there should arise an occurrence of the film (Searching for Bobby Fischer) when Joshua Waitzkin is found with an uncommon chess ability, his folks recruit an exacting mentor Bruce Pandolfini for him who attempts to control him by attempting to change him into another person. Conversely, doing nothing at all to impact a childââ¬â¢s interests in dread of destroying the ability and pushing the cutoff points is another extraordinary and ought to be viewed as an imperfect child rearing methodology by all. This is on the grounds that not assuming any job to ensure the ability is prepared and created with time could likewise lead a youngster to relax and not utilize his/her aptitudes. This is additionally in light of the fact that adolescence is an age when kids have crude personalities and are not in the situation to se ttle on develop choices about themselves. Such ineptitude to choose for themselves combined with absolute nonappearance of any sort of parental oversight can execute hurtful impact on a childââ¬â¢s crude ability. On grounds of offensive impacts delivered by extraordinary parental techniques I feel constrained to weight on utilizing mid way moves toward when proposing to prep a skilled childââ¬â¢s ability. It is suggested by a Polish kid analyst and specialist Dabrowski (refered to in Silverman 113) that innovatively skilled kids are sincerely more unpredictable than others and display increasingly articulated and all around created reactions to different sorts of outer improvements. Looking at the ethical affectability in exceptionally keen, delicate, and inventive kids, it is distinguished that outside upgrades as outrage, dissatisfaction, weight, and frustration would all be able to effectsly affect the skilled kids and as they are professed to be all the more sincerely prep ared, they can demonstrate increasingly touchy reactions to any such boosts. Presently kids gain for the most part from their folks and raising and supporting a talented kid can end up being exceptionally trying for the guardians. Responsive child rearing could be one compelling methodology in such manner. Investing enough energy with the gifted kids is one route by which guardians can successfully identify with them and check out their excellent advantages. Commonly guardians

What is the Purpose of the War on Terror? Essay -- Terrorism Essays
The War On Terror. It is a name that carries numerous solid contemplations and feelings to mind for Americans still to this today. It is has been Americas longest war, most costly war, and a dangerous clash. All things considered, the Iraqi War from 2003 to 2011 brought an expense of 500,000 lives from regular people to activists (Vergano 1). Among the U.S. armed force alone it is evaluated that around 900,000 veterans have had some type of injury running from PTSD to removals (Ruis 1). Also, numerous specialists state once all war reparations have been paid the war will cost as much as three trillion dollars (Broder 1). That implies when the math is done, if the war cost were to be part uniformly among every American family unit, than each family in the U.S. would need to pay $75,000 (Auken 1). At the point when President Barack Obama was battling in 2008 he once contended that through different duties the Iraqi War (2003-2011) was and is costing every America family unit over $100 per month (Broder 1). With such cataclysmic expense and tolls of the a huge number of guiltless lives where can the establishments for such a war exertion start? During the time numerous eyebrow-raising explanations have been raised concerning the war, which rapidly starts to put forth any war attempt premise seem shallow and feeble. Dwindle Baker, a previous White House reporter, composed a book in which an unknown senior Bush organization official is cited saying, ââ¬Å"The just explanation we went into Iraq, I tell individuals presently, is we were searching for somebodyââ¬â¢s ass to kick.â⬠moreover, General John Abizaid, a previous head of U.S. Headquarters and Military Operations in Iraq for 2007 stated, ââ¬Å"Of course it's about oil; we can't generally deny that, in and meet with CNN (Juhasz 1). The Tale of a Frosh
The Tale of a Frosh Late November, fall hangs over the Charles, obscuring the riverâs sparkle with a curtain of grey. The life of the Frosh shifts. Dulled is the thrill of the first impossible PSet. On sleepy breakfast runs, the Dome is just another roof to pass. The Frosh counts the days until departure from MIT, unsure whether the prospect of returning home for the holidays terrifies or exhilarates. The fascinating experiences, the gruelling routine, and the occasional surprises of the semester seem alien and odd. For the first time in her life (since perhaps one rebellious quarter in elementary school), the Frosh can say, âIâm not going to finish this homework,â and not feel bad about it. Success for her is temporarily measured on a Pass/No Record basis, and she is allowed to slip. But the lengthy vacation will soon come to an end for the Frosh. Whispers ripple through the crowds of 2018s: âWeâll start getting grades next semester. What will happen then? Can we make it?â The Frosh imagines all those late night conversations that will inevitably cease when âbarely passingâ no longer remains an acceptable option. âWhy must our academic future be determined by a series of numbers?â she wonders, but knows no alternative. So the Frosh must persevere because graduate school is still part of her grand life plan. Speaking of that, the Froshâs Scheme of Life has been crumbling and expanding astoundingly over the college months. In August, the Frosh could have sworn that Course 18 Option 3 (Theoretical Mathematics) was âThe One.â Now, so much else fuels her curiosity, and theoretical math in fact terrifies her after painful September experiences. The Frosh canât imagine not spending hours on Physics problem solving, rewriting algebraic expressions and shifting +/- signs until a convoluted formula yields a green checkmark on the screen. This process may take minutes or hours. Often the Frosh knocks on her Best Friendâs door for help. Together, they work with heightened efficiency. The friendsâ perspectives differ and thus enhance learning. Thereâs a lesson the Frosh will carry on from this: âItâs way better to work as a team.â Sometimes, the Frosh despairs at the overwhelming routine. Life in college is not how she imagined it. The Frosh had many dreams for her first magical semester, but somehow settled to live from deadline to deadline instead. Perhaps that is not always true, however. Yesterday, for example, the Frosh and her friends splashed together through puddles to see the river at sunrise. At 6:55 am, six minutes later than predicted, the star peeked from beneath the clouds, and colored the Charles a tender pink. Before the weekend, the Frosh went to see Legally Blonde the Musical with Friend B, and afterwards she vowed to be as cool as Elle Woods. The musical inspired because it was that good. MIT had a way better production than Hollywood, for sure. A fortnight ago, the Frosh went to an MIT Wellness Fair and gathered a backpack full of free swag. Last Friday, the Frosh participated in a human-robot interaction study, where she was asked to pummel an innocent robot with a hammer. In return, the Frosh got a tiny robot of her own (which she will not hurt). Whoever said she would âhave timeâ was sorely mistaken. And if the Frosh had time, she would splurge it all on sleep. Sometimes that thought scares the Frosh. She knows her priorities, but then, maybe not. Friends, grades, choices, sleep, experiences are all squeezing into her days. A mere common cold could shatter the current balance. Honestly, even Laundry Day could. But inevitably, the sun comes out again. On campus, exciting events occur. Outside campus, ridiculous adventures await the Frosh and her Best Friend as well. Now, the holiday spirit brightens the hall. Next week the final Problem Sets are due. And sure, afterwards comes the chilling terror of exams, but right now the Frosh worries more about how the âBraâ (brownie + bar) dessert she made almost on her own turned out. Vacations canât last forever. Deadlines, however, remain. The Frosh will get used to those eventually. And sometimes, all nighters must happen. But when the Frosh and her Friend come out into the light of day to finally turn in that one impossible PSet, the river will appear pink. Snow will glisten on the path. The air will smell of a wintery freshness. The Frosh and her Best Friend will smile in anticipation of a restful afternoon.

FAQ Common Questions About South Africas Apartheid
During most of the 20th century, South Africa was ruled by a system called Apartheid, an Afrikaans word meaning apartness, which was based on a system of racial segregation.à When Did Apartheid Start? The term Apartheid was introduced during the 1948 election campaign byà DF Malansà Herenigde Nasionale Partyà (HNP - Reunited National Party). But racial segregation had been in force for many decades in South Africa. In hindsight, there is something of an inevitability in the way the country developed its extreme policies. When theà Union of South Africaà was formed on May 31, 1910, Afrikaner Nationalists were given a relatively free hand to reorganize the countrys franchise according to existing standards of the now-incorporated Boer republics, theà Zuid Afrikaansche Repulickà (ZAR - South African Republic or Transvaal) and Orange Free State. Non-whites in the Cape Colony had some representation, but this would prove to be short-lived. Who Supported Apartheid? The Apartheid policy was supported by various Afrikaans newspapers and Afrikaner cultural movements such as theà Afrikaner Broederbondà andà Ossewabrandwag. How Did the Apartheid Government Come to Power? The United Party actually gained the majority of votes in the 1948 general election. But due to the manipulation of the geographical boundaries of the countrys constituencies before the election, the Herenigde Nasionale Party managed to win the majority of constituencies, thereby winning the election. In 1951, the HNP and Afrikaner Party officially merged to form the National Party, which became synonymous with Apartheid. What Were the Foundations of Apartheid? Over the decades, various forms ofà legislationà were introduced which extended the existing segregation against Blacks to Coloureds and Indians. The most significant acts were theà Group Areas Act No 41 of 1950,à which led to over three million people being relocated through forced removals; the Suppression of Communism Act No 44 of 1950, which was so broadly worded that almost any dissident group could beà banned; theà Bantu Authorities Act No 68 of 1951, which led to the creation ofà Bantustansà (and ultimately independent homelands); and theà Natives (Abolition of Passes and Co-ordination of Documents) Act No 67 of 1952,à which, despite its title, led to the rigid application of Pass Laws. What Was Grand Apartheid? During the 1960s, racial discrimination applied to most aspects of life in South Africa andà Bantustansà were created for Blacks. The system had evolved into Grand Apartheid. The country was rocked by theà Sharpeville Massacre, the African National Congress (ANC) and Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) were banned, and the country withdrew from the British Commonwealth and declared a Republic. What Happened in the 1970s and 1980s? During the 1970s and 80s, Apartheid was reinventedââ¬âa result of increasing internal and international pressures and worsening economic difficulties. Black youth was exposed to increasing politicization and found expression against Bantu education through theà 1976 Soweto Uprising. Despite the creation of a tricameral parliament in 1983 and the abolition of the Pass Laws in 1986, the 1980s saw the worst political violence by both sides. When Did Apartheid End? In February 1990, President FW de Klerk announced Nelson Mandelas release and began the slow dismantling of the Apartheid system. In 1992, a whites-only referendum approved the reform process. In 1994, the first democratic elections were held in South Africa, with people of all races being able to vote. A Government of National Unity was formed, with Nelson Mandela as president and FW de Klerk and Thabo Mbeki as deputy presidents.

The Works That Have Impacted The Art World And Have Made...
Research Paper Throughout time there has been of course many influences that have impacted the art world and have made it what it is today. However, there are some artistic movements that have had a greater impact and stand out over others. The movement that has always personally stood out to me was Ancient Egyptian art. The works that were produced for time period are interesting in terms of the lack of tools and the innovation to make these paintings, sculptures, and architecture that almost seem impossible to have been constructed. In my opinion the arts produced during the Early Dynastic through the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt are some of the most technologically advance forms that stand out over all other art forms for the timeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Instead we must develop a psychical distance or detachment from ancient Egyptian art in order to view it in its purest aesthetic form. Once we have achieved this then we can move on to the first of the two methods, formalism . With this method of formalism we compare form and style, analyzing only the purely visual aspects such as color, line, shape and texture of an object or artwork. Two formalist individuals worth mentioning are Immanuel Kant and Clive Bell. Kant who teaches us the importance of the disinterested viewer, and Bell who also explains this. Bell states in his article The Aesthetic Hypothesis that Our practical interests, with their correlative pleasures and pains, are blended, become confused now and then, and disquiet our aesthetic interest, but never become united with itâ⬠. So even though ancient Egyptian art has always stood out to me personally, we cannot let our personal interests or emotions effect the way we analyze the works produced from ancient Egypt. The second of the two methods needed to view and analyze the works from ancient Egypt is iconography. This method studies the content of images and symbols depicted within a certain work of art or interpretation of these. One art historian whose works of iconography are still relevant today was Erwin Panofsky. Iconography is split into three levels of learning

These events indire ctly shaped beliefs about art in the United States, as it was a new nation that was raised on strong European influences. Throughout the history of art education, there is a common thread of political relation. The attitudes concerning art related directly to the political and economic happenings at the time. This remained a constant with early American settlers as well. For example, Puritansââ¬â¢ lives revolved around faith and farming, therefore visual art played a role that was not necessary integral. The arts involved a broad term that included crafts that were taught at home. The main goal of education was to teach students to read so that they could read scriptures. Art education today has veered quite a bit from this mentality. Art is still considered a specialized area, but even more so than in times prior to the Industrial Revolution. Where during this time period certain crafts that were part of daily living were routinely taught to young children at home, con temporary society has moved away from this. Literature Review Strategic Information System
Question: Discuss about the Literature Reviewfor Strategic Information System. Answer: Literature Review: The notable entities which have been illustrated in this report include the evaluation of an organizational structure and the related operational disadvantages. Description of the method for system acquisition for the organization could be noted as a prominent highlight of the report. The assignment also reflects on the process of developing and adoption of packages of accounting software (Ali Haslinda, 2014). Specific discussion on the market for Tricor Australia that has been selected for the report by referring to its capabilities as a known accounting enterprise in Australia reflects on the implications for market adaptability by implementing information systems (Boonstra, 2013). The experience of Tricor has enabled it to acquire progressive growth in a minimal span of time thereby implying plausible inferences towards its capability to address a diverse assortment of business requirements placed by clients. The emphasis of the organization on addressing innovative as well as entrepreneurial business needs has also been noticed as promising indicator of the organizations drive and passion for accomplishing competitive advantage. Tricor Australia has depicted cognizable improvement in the market of technical and commercial accounting services and has acquired the reputation of a potential player in the industry. Requirement of financial consultancy services by CFOs of prominent organizations as well as SMEs is also identified as a rationale for the companys consistent development. The capabilities of Tricor in provision of professional accounting services has led to the formation of a reliable network of professionals in the domain of finance throughout Australia as well as other prominent locations around the world such as Malaysia, Indonesia, United Kingdom and Japan (Dance, 2016). The cross border operations of the organization are not limited to these countries alone and the strategic expansion initiatives have led to promising fulfilment of organizational needs as well as client requirement in every area served by Tricor Australia. The innovative measures of the organization have successfully induced favourable outcomes such as improvement of net worth of the company alongside improving the returns for clients of the organization (Dance, 2016). Flat organizational structure can be assumed as the organization structure that can be observed in case of Tricor Australia. The organizational structure is characterized by the elimination of majority of roles and responsibilities of the middle management thereby leading to exclusion of a large share of functions of middle management. The elimination of notable functions of the middle management reflect on the reduction of gap between the top management and the ground level staff such as employees in the sales department, customers and staff working on the frontline (Farantos Koutsoukis, 2016). One of the profound advantages that can be obtained from the flat organizational structure refers to the breadth of the structure that facilitates noticeable reduction in response time of the organization. Response time could be defined from the perspective of variable customer preferences and conditions in the external environment (Haron, Sabri Zolkarnain, 2013, November). The distinct domains of the accounting software package for Tricor Australia could therefore be associated with the single flat organizational structure with negligible indications of support for a hierarchical organizational structure. The foremost entity supported by the domains of accounting software package of Tricor is the promotion of Group Policy development through integration of GPO in the computer units and users in context of the company (Hoque, Hossin Khan, 2016). The implications of Group Policy suggest that it is invulnerable to the organizational structure alongside indicating that users could not perform activities such as WMI filtering and creation of custom GPOs. The organizational structure of Tricor can be utilized for assignment of policies within the group and ensure feasible resource management owing to the observation of a logical nature. The observed flat organizational structure in case of Tricor Australia is capable of facilitating plausible advantages albeit with the concerns for specific issues and setbacks that can be observed in the operational aspects of the organization (Hovelja Vasilecas, 2013). The management is always at the risk of losing control over operations in a flat organizational structure and in case of Tricor Australia, the massive scale of the flat organizational structure could be reflective of concerns for threat to the operational systems due to disparities in distribution of managers and employees (Josiah, 2013). The management of the organization has to face considerable difficulties in terms of control due to lack of human capital for checking unrequited behaviour as well as support staff for following up on the decisions implemented by the senior management of Tricor. These implications could lead to formidable setbacks for the working relationships among individuals in a group leading to setbacks for management of human resources (Josiah, 2013). The management can face consider notable setbacks in context of personal interactions with employees. The implications of the development of personal interactions of the management with employees can be observed in the maintenance of trust alongside ensuring accountability and responsibility among employees for their work as well as for maintaining their professional commitments to the organization (Kummer Schmiedel, 2016). The management also faces noticeable limitations in the form of reduction in employee morale, authority issues, power struggles and ambiguities among employees pertaining to organization management. Employee retention can be a profound issue that can be observed in case of the flat organizational structure noticed in Tricor Australia. The performance of employees in the organization has to be dependent on the precedents of searching consistently for cognizable improvements in the company profile apart from the improvement in their salaries are reflective of profound concerns for realizing job satisfaction (Lee, et al., 2015). Employees could face considerable inclinations towards acquiring job positions in other companies where they perceive higher recognition of their personal efforts and contributions to development of the organizational profile with the references to increment in pay raise as well as promotions assigned to them. Flat organizational structure is accountable for potential setbacks for organizational growth and the crucial nature of change alongside the associated apprehensions can be major pitfalls for the company. The management of Tricor Australia can consider refraining from creative opportunities by inducing efforts for maintenance of organizational structure leading to reduction of prospects for the long term growth of the organization (Luse, et al., 2013). The flat organizational structure is also accountable for proliferation of unhealthy competition among employees thereby causing reduction in motivation of employees and increasing the confusion among employees. The reasonable system acquisition method for Tricor Australia would be a custom developed software since the processing requirements in the organization are specific for the organization thereby requiring own application software. The custom development of the application software can be ensured through the programmers available with the company who can coordinate with the analysts in order to establish internal information technology framework that can support the development of software on custom basis (Rajendran, 2015). The organization could implement the services of a computer agency or software development organization for accomplishing this objective which seems irrational owing to the large magnitude of the organization and the availability of a full-time development team. The final outcome of the development process is custom developed software that addresses the variable processing requirements of company and therefore suits the specific requirements of Tricor. The notable benefits that can be obtained from the custom developed software system acquisition method refer to fulfilment of the organizational requirements precisely and since costs of the system acquisition method would not bother Tricor due to global scale of operations, the system acquisition method provides viable implications towards cost effective solution for accounting information management. The flowchart for an organizations sales procedure (as shown in Appendix I) can be considered as a major requirement for the selling of products of Tricor Australia. Sale can be defined as the institution of a relationship between customer and vendor alongside promoting the completion of the prospective stage (Rasiah, 2014). The providers of services and goods by utilizing the channel of salespersons the objective is accomplished by the completion of sales as a response to request, appropriation and acquisition initiatives for the organization (Ren, et al., 2015). The communication of product title and the relevance of the product price with the application features and the obligations that can be derived on behalf of seller for passing ownership. The threats or setbacks that have been recognized in the organizations systems are profoundly reflective of the threats to the data security of Tricor Australia. The threats posed by hacking and the varying insufficiencies in the hardware and information systems framework could lead to detrimental consequences such as theft of confidential data related to the organization and the information pertaining to employees. These implications could account for cognizable setbacks in the custom developed software system implemented by the organization. The development of accounting system package and integrating them in the organizational framework are considered as imperative requirements for leveraging the advantages of accounting information systems for Tricor Australia. The necessity of technical support is crucial for the organization to capitalize on the prominent advantages of the accounting information systems which can be observed in the support facilitated by the Internet across varying telecom installations. The internet has become a common substrate for varying information networks and hence it indicates profound requirement for adoption in context of implementation of accounting software packages (Wali, Sadq Rasheed, 2016). Human resource management functions also require promising developments in the diverse sectors of training, computer centres, technical skills and accounting and should be facilitated to the staff at all times (Rajendran, 2015). The prominent insufficiencies in the domain of design, utilization and development of IT and accounting information systems could be derived from the lack of a functional accounting software package. Human resource can be considered as the primary entity which could dictate the operational efficiency of the computerized custom accounting software package. Therefore the software package presents promising implications towards the requirement of workforce involvement in the management of the software. Tricor Australia has noticeable competences in terms of technology based innovation that leads to adoption of computerized accounting system. The adoption of computerized accounting software reflects on the increment in organizational efficiency through reduction in delivery time and pricing for products and services alongside inducing operational development initiatives. The distribution of accounting software packages in diverse markets has depicted considerable change over the period of last 10 years indicating drastic modifications from country to country (Kummer Schmiedel, 2016). Existing market size for the accounting software packages reserves approximately 65% of total market share. However, the significance of market share in determining efficiency of accounting software packages can be undermined on the grounds of subjective nature of market share. The tax and audit services provided by the accounting software package can be considered as credible source of revenue owing to the independence of their demand from economic conditions. Accounting software packages are noticed for providing advisory services through incorporation of innovative technology such as data analytics and cloud computing services. Presently the Australian accounting software industry is dominated by names such as Xero, Intuit and MyOB leading to prominent levels of competition. The requirements for monitoring accounts and maintaining them flexibly could be imperatively observed in the case of every organization and hence the need for clipping off the conventional accounting frameworks and physical maintenance of accounting records became prominent. Therefore accounting software packages became highly popular in the Australian market in order to fulfil the above mentioned requirements. Adoption of accounting software packages is largely associated with the objectives for reducing tiresome paperwork that can lead to concerns for omission and commission as well as intensive use of time and financial resources. One of the profound challenges faced by companies in case of adoption refers to the lack of autonomy among various business units which leads to pressure on the accounting department for reviewing the accounting reports of other departments alongside removing any superfluous additions, inappropriate formats and duplication . The control of data security could be facilitated by the approach for information centric security alongside protection of cloud data leading to acquisition of competitive advantage for Tricor (Farantos Koutsoukis, 2016). Presently, customers of accounting software packages depict profound gaps and challenges such as weak reporting framework, outdated modules, and security threats, lack of features and accuracy, higher costs, lack of efficiency, access of foreign parties to the software. The accessibility of data is also a profound concern of system users since input of data is easily possible whereas extracting data could not be as flexible which invites concerns from application developers to make the software accessible and friendly for end users of the software (Kummer Schmiedel, 2016). Conclusion: The report presented a comprehensive literature review pertaining to the application of accounting software packages in context of a selected company, Tricor Australia. The report emphasized on limitations placed by organizational structure and the concerns of varying scales of operations of companies. Other noticeable highlights of the review are directed towards the concerns for data security in the information systems alongside accessibility of data for end users. References Ali, R. Improving Processes Essay Example Paper Improving Processes Essay Introduction Improving Processes: Chipotle Mexican Grill This report is to discuss the findings from observations made at the Chipotle restaurant on Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando. Observations were made on Monday August 9, 2010 with the first time frame from noon to 1 p. m. and the second time frame from 3 p. m. to 4 p. m. These observations are used to make recommendations on managing queues, process capability, and statistical process control. Observations from the two time frames will provide information regarding the process design of customers placing orders, preparation, and payment, employee duties when not preparing orders, along with the number of customers served. A stop-watch and a note pad were used to collect information. According to Chase, Jacobs, Aquilano (2005) a company must design the product or service to be produced or delivered at a reasonable cost. Chipotle has accomplished this task. Customers receive a made-to-order menu selections consisting of a burrito, burrito bo wl, crispy or soft tacos, or a salad. Selections include chicken, barbecue or free-range pork, and steak along with beans, rice, guacamole, four types of salsa, sour cream, cheese, and lettuce. Beverage items include beer choices. Customers can place orders online with payment on a secure, password protected site, faxing an order form, or using an I-Phone application. Queues A rope divider is used at all times that guides customers to the order point. I visit Chipotle on a regular basis during peak times and I find the system adequate in moving customers through the process. Employees appear well trained in preparing the selections quickly without error. Improving Processes Essay Body Paragraphs A sign should be placed to direct the pick-up of phone, fax, or I-Phone orders. Performance Metric and Process Capability The output of Chipotle is the customer purchase of menu items. To gather data for Chipotleââ¬â¢s service process, I collected information on the number of customers served in one hour with respect to the number of employees on the prep line. During the peak time of noon to 1 p. m. 63 customers were served with an average of 57 seconds to complete the order. During the slow time of 3 p. m. to 4 p. m. with 18 customers were served. During the slow time employees engaged in more pleasantries with customers and customers took ore time in choosing items so a little more time was used to prepare the order. Customers and employees likely feel some sense of pressure during peak times to place the order to keep the line moving. When employees were not preparing orders they were busy with other maintenance items such as refilling food items, cleaning, and stocking bevera ges, bags of chips, the condiment station, and bags for to-go orders. At Chipotle, the process is simple and streamlined as shown in the flow chart at the end of the paper. During my observations, three employees worked the assembly line in both periods. The steps in building a burrito are: Employee #1: Order taking-the customer orders a burrito and then heats a flour tortilla in a press and places on a foiled wrapping paper and passes to Employee # 2. Employee #2: Employee starts building the burrito with customer choices. Employee scoops additional items from sectioned station bins containing options and layering each item in the burrito. Customer continues to makes selections until no selections remain; the burrito is then complete. If a side of guacamole is ordered then the employee scoops a portion and places it into a separate container and caps. For dining in: burrito is placed on a tray and passed to the cashier. To-go: burrito is wrapped tightly in the foil paper and marked so the cashier knows what to charge. Employee #3: Dine-in: employee asks if customer wants a drink or chips. If yes, the employee pulls items and places on the tray and rings up the order. If no, employee rings up order. To-go: employee asks if customer wants a drink, chips; if yes, employee pulls items and places in the bag, and rings up the order. If no, employee rings up the order. Employee processes payment in the form of cash, credit, or debit card. For cash payments, cashier takes cash and makes change. For credit or debit payments, cashier takes card, swipes in the card system where a receipt is automatically printed, hands receipt to customer and customer is on their way. No signature is required. Bottleneck During the peak collection period there was a bottleneck with employee #2 because of the number of items chosen for the order and again at employee #3 when processing payment. Employee # 3 handles the packaging, drinks, chips and payment which when added together equals more time than the two previous steps. Part of this time is because customers are deciding on a beverage and whether they want chips. Of note, a bottleneck also occurred at employee #2 when adolescentââ¬â¢s were placing orders because they had difficulty making choices among items in part because they werenââ¬â¢t sure if they would like an item or because they were waiting for their friend to make a decision. Recommendations are needed for employee #2 and employee #3. Learning Curve The menu selection at Chipotle is a key factor in the service provided. Selections are in front of the preparer and customer so the learning curve for both is very low; items are placed in the line in the same sequence every day. An employee can be trained in a few hours because of the ease of use. The quality of the food is high. Chipotle employees are high performers so fewer employees are needed to operate a store. The day of my visit there were six employees: three worked the order line, one o n the grill, one to keep the other ingredients ready for use and the store manager. Chipotle appears to be a lean operation. Process Design Chipotle has a basic design process where order taking, food assembly, and payment is in sync. Chipotle offers a self-serve condiment bar. Chipotle accepts credit/debit cards but does not require a signature, which saves time and makes the process more efficient when it comes to time metric. Chipotle has a short lead time from order placement to order completion. Chipotle offers some food promotions that are also processed quickly. Statistical Process Control During my observations, I did not see any customers return a food item for replacement nor did I observe any food being destroyed because it was considered unusable. Chipotle appears to have controls in place for when to cook the meat to avoid waste. Chipotle can adapt quickly from a slow period to busy period quickly. The backup system of having items available for replacement in the produ ction line saves time. Chipotle takes pride in offering healthy, high quality food choices from sustainable resources. Chipotle contracts with certain farmers who agree to meet the requirements of Chipotle for the products they serve; products are rarely purchased for use outside the United States. Six Sigma Using the words of Edward Baker, former director of quality at Ford Motor Company, ââ¬Å"Until you reach agreement on what constitutes a service defect, your Six Sigma effort will likely disappoint. According to Deming, ââ¬Å"People donââ¬â¢t cause defects, systems doâ⬠(Harvard Business School, Working Knowledge for Business Leaders). Six Sigma is a beneficial tool to food service for increasing food safety. Six Sigma engages employees to provide problem-solving ideas. At the same time employees feel empowered when engaging in problem-solving solutions. Six Sigma increases service and delivery and measures output so that inputs can be available when needed further enh ancing the process and customer satisfaction as well as profits. Recommendations Additional employee During peak hours four employees can be incorporated into the line increasing station #2 to two employees. One employee can scoop the selections and the other can place the order on the tray, retrieve any chips and beverage for dining-in; for to-go orders, the same items can be retrieved to the counter and the cashier can complete the transaction while the order is bagged. This solution could accommodate more customers during the rush period reducing wait time. Of note, to-go orders using an additional employee could result in slowing the process if this employee and the cashier are not in sync. During slower times the extra employee can prep food items, stock work and condiment stations, clean, drinks, bags, empty the trash, and allow time for breaks. Menu additions Chipotle should consider adding soup or chili to the menu, create a childrenââ¬â¢s menu, and smaller portions. Side orders of rice and beans could be offered for those who do not want rice and/or beans in their burrito or tacos. Additional items could cause bottlenecks because more choices would be available but additional items would increase profits and a broader customer base. A slight learning curve would exist for a short amount of time because the station set-up would be altered slightly and additional tasks would have to be performed e. g. spoon soup into a bowl. Payment Process One recommendation would be to have the cashier only accept payments because multiple tasks for Employee #3 slows the process cycle time. A lower cycle time allows maximum output that increases revenues. Another recommendation would be to install change dispensing registers. These registers would save time and provide more accuracy in dispersing change. To-go Orders Signage should be placed for customers picking up phone, fax, and I-Phone orders. This is not clearly marked when entering the store and could cause c onfusion and delays. During peak times, there should be an additional station for prepaid to-go orders so customers do not have to wait in line or cause a delay in the queues because the cashier has to stop and give the customer the order. Any order placed by phone, internet, or fax should be prepaid using a credit card to expedite service. Promotions Chipotle should increase the number and frequency of promotions. With todayââ¬â¢s economy, customers want the best quality for the least amount of money. Chipotleââ¬â¢s main menu items are well priced between $5. 75 and $6. 50 and the portions are large so there is value in the meals. In conclusion, the assembly line process used by Chipotle works well because of the limited number of items on the menu. The core functions of the three employees are on the assembly line with backup food items close by to allow easy retrieval to continue the process. Having to leave the line and go to a kitchen area for more items would significant ly impact the process. Chipotle maintains a strong customer base because a quality meal is sold for a low price with excellent service. Recommendations for prepaid orders and additional employee should be strongly considered. The Inclusive Classroom Best Supports Student Success
The Inclusive Classroom Best Supports Student Success Federal law in the United States (according to the IDEA) prescribes that students with disabilities should be placed in their neighborhood school with as much time as possible in a general education setting. This is LRE, or Least Restrictive Environment, provides that children should receive educational services with their typical peers unless education there cannot be achieved satisfactorily even with appropriate supplementary aids and services. A district is required to maintain a full range of environments from least restrictive (general education) to most restrictive (special schools).à The Successful Inclusive Classroom Keys to success include: Students need to be active - not passive learners.Children should be encouraged to make choices as often as possible, a good teacher will allow students some time to flounder as some of the most powerful learning stems from taking risks and learning from mistakes.Parental involvement is crucial.Students with disabilities must be free to learn at their own pace and have accommodations and alternative assessment strategies in place to meet their unique needs.Students need to experience success, learning goals need to be specific, attainable and measurable and have some challenge to them. What is the Teachers Role? The teacher facilitates the learning by encouraging, prompting, interacting, and probing with good questioning techniques, such as How do you know its right- can you show me how?. The teacher provides 3-4 activities that address the multiple learning styles and enables students make choices. For instance, in a spelling activity a student may choose to cut and paste the letters from newspapers or use magnetic letters to manipulate the words or use colored shaving cream to print the words. The teacher will have mini-conferences with students. The teacher will provide many learning manipulatives and opportunities for small group learning. Parent volunteers are helping with counting, reading, assisting with unfinished tasks, journals, reviewing basic concepts such as math facts and sight words. In the inclusive classroom, a teacher will differentiate instruction as much as possible, which will benefit both the students with and without disabilities, since it will provide more individual attention and attention to What Does the Classroom Look Like? The classroom is a beehive of activity. Students should be engaged in problem solving activities.à John Dewey once said, the only time we think is when were given a problem. The classroom that is child centered relies onà learning centers to support whole group and small group instruction. There will be a language center with learning goals, perhaps a media center with opportunity to listen to taped stories or create a multimedia presentation on the computer. There will be a musicà center and a math center with many manipulatives. Expectations should always be clearly stated prior to students engaging in learning activities. Effective classroom management tools and routines will provide students with reminders about the acceptable noise level, learning activity and accountability for producing a finished product or accomplishing the center tasks. The teacher will supervise learning throughout the centers while either landing at one center for small group instruction or creating Teacher Time as a rotation. Activities at the center take into consideration multiple intelligences and learning styles. Learningà center time should begin with whole class instructions and end with whole class debriefing and evaluation: How did we do with maintaining a successful learning environment? Which centers were the most fun?à Where did you learn the most? Learning centers are a great way to differentiate instruction.à You will place some activities that every child can complete, and some activities designed for advanced, on level and remediated instruction. Models for Inclusion: Co-teaching:à Often this approach is used by school districts, especially in secondary settings.à I have often heard from general education teachers who are co-teaching provide very little support, are not involved in planning, in assessment or in instruction. Sometimes they just dont show up and tell their general ed partners when they have scheduled and IEP.à Effective co-teachers help with planning, provide suggestions for differentiation across abilities, and do some instruction to give the general education teacher the opportunity to circulate and support all the students in a classroom. Whole Class Inclusion:à Some districts (like those in California) are placing dually certified teachers in classrooms as social studies, math or English Language Arts teachers in secondary classrooms.à The teacher teaches the subject to both students with and without disabilities and carries a caseload of students enrolled in a specific grade, etc.à They would most likely call these inclusion classrooms and include students who are English Language Learners or struggling with grades. Push In:à A resource teacher will come into the general classroom and meet with students during centers time to support their IEP goals and provide small group or individualized instruction.à Often districts will encourage teachers to provide a mix of push in and pull out services. Sometimes the services are provided by a para-professional at the direction of a special education teacher. Pull Out:à This sort of pull out is usually indicated with a Resource Room placement in the IEP.à Students who have significant problems with attention and staying on task may benefit from a quieter setting without distractions.à At the same time, children whose disabilities put them at a significant disadvantage with their typical peers may be more willing to risk reading aloud or doing math if they arent worried about being dissed (dis-respected) or mocked by their general education peers.à What does Assessment Look Like? Observation is key. Knowing what to look for is critical. Does the child give up easily? Does the child persevere? Is the child able to show how he got the task right? The teacher targets a few learning goals per day and a few students per day to observe for goal attainment. Formal/informal interviews will help the assessment process. How closely does the individual remain on task? Why or why not? How does the student feel about the activity? What are their thinking processes? In Summary Successful learning centers require good classroom management and well known rules and procedures. A productive learning environment will take time to implement. The teacher may have to call the whole class together regularly in the beginning to ensure that all rules and expectations are being adhered to. Remember, think big but start small. Introduce a couple of centers per week. See more information on assessment.

The Crush Is A Short Film Film Studies Essay
The Crush Is A Short Film Film Studies Essay The film starts off with a white text saying a purdy picture production behind the text a black background appears. As it clears up you can hear a soft and strong womans voice saying three words Reveal, Pretend and love. This leads to an Establishing shot which sets up a classroom scene, suggesting that the woman is a teacher the camera has a long shot of the teacher; the camera goes around the room which shows all the kids in the classroom. Warm colours are implicated to show a positive attitude towards the teacher which applies those three words that should to be learned. There is a shot with a young boy the camera has a close up shot of his face to show his kid like emotions, there are birds singing in the background also with the soft music playing. By looking at the young boys face tells me that his emotions are dreamy towards the teacher and hasnt been paying attention. The school bell goes off in the background, which courses the students to leave class which creates a medium shot. Ardal the young boy sitting at his desk and still dreamy hears Ms Purdys voice saying his name; the lighting is a sense of Joy and good. A medium shot is used as he calmly walks to Ms Purdys desk, a tracking shot follows him to show Ms Purdy curiosity and interest with what Ardal has got. Ardal gives her the ring Ms Purdy was surprised and also great full the lighting is a sense of Delight which contrasts with the colour and sends him of to have a great weekend. A head on shot is used while Ardal walks home therefore the action comes straight to the audiences. He arrives home he starts to have dinner with his parents, sitting right in the middle with his parents sitting on either side of him which creates a medium shot. The light suggests that of a delight and also the colour is a calmer, relaxed feeling. A close up shot of dad emotions suggesting to be interested, he asks everybody about their day but also continuing about his story of the day. He tells his son the exciting story with his facial expressions makes the story even more exciting to listen to which becomes into a swish Plan. Ardal all of a sudden asks his mum about when is the prorate age to get married. The dad is shocked with this statement and looks at his wife with disbelieve. His wife answers and asks why have you got some news of us but with a smart response he says that hell keep his mum posted about marriage. After dinner he is in his room a low angle shot is used, he op ens up a Ten year planner diary goes to the year 2015 month 22-28 page and writes down Marry Ms Purdy. He looks at the text after his done writing which is an Aerial shot; dim lighting is implemented to suggest a Force and strength. A long shot shows Ardal enjoying himself and using a public bin as a prop, a feeling of happiness which suggests warm colours. Also a soft but enjoy full music plays in the background suggesting that its a nonviolent act. Ardals mum walks out of the shop she looks at her son and yells come on Ardal with a sense of being in a rush. The music stops playing, Ardal follows his mum he immediately faces the ground. As he walks a ring of a door bell goes off on the background suggesting that someone he matter know is walking out of a shop. He hears a soft but kind voice saying hello Ardal with excitement he recognises the voice and immediately looks up, his eyes brightens up with excitement that its really Ms Purdy. She complements on his new shoes a high angle shot is used at the same time a close up shot of her new ring to show Ardal but he doesnt recognise the ring. A High Angle is used to show how powerful Pierce is, while Ms Purdy is talking about the ring and how they are engaged. Pie rce isnt interested at all and seems to be in a rush to watch a football game. He pulls Ms Purdy away from the conversation which automatically ends the conversation and leads her away. Close up shot of Ardals emotions with an angry facial toward Pierce is implemented. Ardal is back in his room, the colours give the sense of anger and also the dim lighting. He rips a page out of his diary it seems to me that his crunching up the page was he wrote Marry Ms Purdy. A close up shot is used when He throws the paper on the floor and stomps on it, which suggests anger towards the idea of getting married. A scene with dim lighting suggests the idea of death which shows Ardals dad examining a gun; he hides the gun on the top section of the wardrobe from reach. Ardal stands near the door peaking as his dad hides the gun, he shows a lot of interest towards the gun. Ardal comes back in his room, he reattaches the crunched up paper to his diary. At the same time he looks to his side and stares at a poster of a cowboy that is having a challenge a duel to the death. Suggesting a high angle shot with the sense of power he wants to be over Pierce. A grey golf Volkswagen is packed outside the school. Pierce is waiting for Ms Purdy; he looks frustrated that she is always the last teacher to leave school. A sudden knock on the car window, Pierce calmly puts the window down. As the window goes down, there is a close up shot of Ardal standing beside the car fearless he demands him not to marry Ms Purdy, she is mine Ardal says. Pierce laughs with joy and disbelieve he explains that its never gone happen. Ardal demands a duel to the death, he tells Pierce where and when to meet him of this challenge the lack of communication suggests a dim of lighting. A Reverse angle is used as Pierce accepts this challenge with a laugh he also asks with a childlike behaviour which weapons to bring. Ardal says pistols, he calmly walks away. Ms Purdy comes and sits inside the car, the lighting in the car suggests a sense of Innocences. A Head on shot is used again when Ardal walks home but his facial emotions suggests a seriousness, it seemed to me t hat he is planning ideas while his walking home. Ardal is back in his parents room sitting on their bed, a high angle is used and the lighting once again gives of Death and evil look to the scene. While Ardal stares up giving him a low angle shot of the wardrobe where his dad has hidden the gun, the background music play which helps with the senses of stargazing a plan of attack. Pierce is once again waiting of Ms Purdy at the school but this time his in an energetic mood of his close up facial expressions. Ms Purdy walks to the car and sits inside. She and Pierce connect lips with a kiss, as the kiss ends. Ardal is given a long shot therefore tells us that his standing in front of the school doors the shot was taken from the car pointing towards Ardal which also gives him a horror look. Pierce gets out of the car while Ms Purdy is trying to calm him down also letting him to leave it alone his just a kid. Engorging her, Pierce leaves and closes the door behind him which leaves Ms Purdy worried suggested by the dim lighting and also the close up shot. Pierce walks into a four walled concrete room, Suggesting to me that it looks like a squash room with one white line going across and one thick line at the bottom going across the wall. The Camera zooms into his face and then out, which gives him a side view. In the shot Ardal appears by the door Pierces full body turns around to look at him, Ardal drops his bag on the floor. Ardal asks Pierce were is his pistol but he doesnt care about this problem, he pulls out a gun and points it to Pierce a close up shot of him holding the gun, helps to determine that idea. His shocked with Ardals actions also thinking it might be a fake gun but Ardals knows its real. Ms Purdy walks into the building she sees Ardal pointing a gun at Pierce. A close up is used to determine how afraid she is of what might happen next. Pierce begs him to put the gun down but Ardal is determined to kill Pierce and stop him marring Ms Purdy. The lighting of scene suggest a more Evil which also is Death , Ardal activities the trigger of the gun aims it at Pierce, Pierce going down on his knees and tells the true about why he got engaged to Ms Purdy just to shut her up about marriage. As Pierce yells at Ms Purdy to call the cops, Ardal shoots a big loud bang goes off. The camera shots move around with Pierce as he flows to the ground, a close up shot comes back to Ms Purdy as she screams wit h fear. A close up shot of Ardals face shows his eyes not blinking once and fearless. A Blank screen shows for 3 Seconds Slowly the blank screen disappears. Orange ball roles across Pierces body, a close up of his eyes opening and realising that his not dead. Ardal looks back at Ms Purdy and says see Ms she also realises that the gun is fake, she takes out her ring and throws it at Pierce. Pierce gets up with anger towards Ardal but Ms Purdy protects him. They both leave the room, leaving Pierce alone in with disbelieve. Conclusions The director has used good angle shots for each scene to make the film as real as it can be. With the use close up, long shots, medium shots, high/low angle shots and also head on shots. The lighting was well implemented throughout the movie, with the sense of Death, Joy and good will. Colours helped with all aspects of the film mainly with lighting. Ms Purdy takes the gun of Ardal and she puts it in her handbag he explains that his dad had gotten him toy gun for his birthday and he was hiding it form him, Ardal asks if his actions are going into his report but Ms Purdy tells him that it is they little secret. Ms Purdy walks Ardal home and the back ground music is a happier and more relaxed. First time :: essays research papers
The first time event that I remember best is my first time in Blue Water. It was a life altering event for me, and I am thankful for it. I forgot what the most important thing in life was, and I became a bad person and I did bad things, in turn ended me up in jail. I have to admit it at first I was scared so bad I was sick to my stomach. I remember the thoughts that were going through my head. I kept thinking about all the movies I have seen about jail, that just made it worse, and it really bothered me that I would have to get a strip search. à à à à à Once I was there, it had a smell that I could never forget; it was a sterile smell but at the same time grungy. I had to strip in front of a guard. He took my clothes and gave me burgundy shirt and sweat pants. After your search they take you to the doctors to look at you and see if you have any problems. Then a guard will take you to the admission house, it was called Trent House. Trent has 18 hour lock up and half an hour outside time. When you are in that house it has very limited privileges, also it has big, thick metal doors that have huge locks on them. à à à à à When I walked into the range I was scared, but I was trying to look like I wasnââ¬â¢t. When I got out of my room, I had one guy come up and tell me to fight someone, and told me if I didnââ¬â¢t that him and three other guys would jump me. The way people handle things in there is extremely different then the way people do in society. You have to fight for your respect, and thatââ¬â¢s all that counts. I found myself not as afraid once you have some respect. Its not exactly like real jail, people donââ¬â¢t get raped or killed, but in a way it is in the fact fighting solves all problems. à à à à à When I was transferred to Georgian House I got that feeling in my stomach again, because Georgian held people that have worse crimes and have been there longer. It was the exact same, fight and people wonââ¬â¢t bother you. We showered alone, and we only got a little paper cup of shampoo and a little bar of soap.

Instead we do our best to have a wonderful and creative show. We prepare so many things to entertain our audience like we have fire dance, band, modeling and other things. When we started to performed in front of so many people we feel nervous and happy because all of our efforts and talents are can be share and shown to other people. All of classmates are cheering to each one of us to give strength and to help boost each of oneââ¬â¢s self-confidence. At the end of our show you can see from their faces th at they are truly happy with what they done for the variety show, you can see to each one of us the laughter and the tears in getting flat one grade in our variety show. For me our show was totally great and worth remembering for although we had so many mistakes in our performance.I realize so many things after our variety show that we need to arrive early to have much time in preparing for our variety show and when you are performing in front, you must focus on audience faces . The audience should be the central focus of everything you do. Don't go over their heads unless it's the only thing keeping you upright. Make eye contact, smile at them, and feed of that energy . I enjoyed very much our first variety show in college and I would really treasure it for the rest of my life. Submitted by: Leedee Liane S. Carbonilla

Imagery and Personification in Robert Frostôs Poem Mowing
Robert Frost was a poet known for his writings that depicted the rural lifestyle of New England around the turn of the century. In this sonnet, Frost brings our interpretation and understanding of the life of a farmer working his field to a much deeper level. Frostââ¬â¢s Mowing, without following the style of a Petrarchan or Shakespearean sonnet, employs the figurative techniques of personification and imagery in order to break down a farmerââ¬â¢s monologue and tell us how working the field is a good, rewarding occupation, not just manual labor. The form of Mowing plays an important part in the development of the sonnetââ¬â¢s meaning. It is unusual as it is neither a Petrarchan nor a Shakespearean sonnet in form. Instead, it takes on qualities from both of the styles. The sonnet divides up into an octet and a sestet like a Petrarchan sonnet is supposed to, but at the same time it drives toward the final couplet in its last two lines like a Shakespearean sonnet would. In the octet, Frost tells us about the whispering sound that the scythe is making as it cuts the grass, but associates it with subjective ideas like ââ¬Å"the heat of the sunâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the lack of soundâ⬠out in the field. (Line 4,5) The sestet then tells us that the whispering is about the ââ¬Å"the factâ⬠of labor, and how it is the reason the farmer does his work, because it is something real that he can always claim as a good contribution he has made. (Line 13) The importance of the sonnetââ¬â¢s last two lines gives it a ShakespeareanShow MoreRelatedPoems of Robert Frost Essay1556 Words à |à 7 PagesRobert Frost was an American poet, and playwright who became one of the leading pioneers in poetry in the late 1800ââ¬â¢s into the 1900ââ¬â¢s. The health care industry has the highest percentage of occupational hazards of any workforce industry (SIC division structure, 2015). To control these numbers, several state and federal agencies were established to regulate risks to health and personal safety. The regulatory authority of OSHA is ranged to cover many types of occupational hazards and hazard communication. A Brooklyn medical facility experienced OSHA firsthand as they were investigated in 2014 for failing to adequately protect against workplace violence. During their investigation, OSHA found that between the dates of February 7th and April 12, 2014, around 40 individual incidents of workplace violence had occurred, the most serious of which resulted in brain injuries sustained by a nurse who was attacked by a patient. All of the incidents involved staff members being verbally and physically attacked by patients and visitors, or staff members being injured when breaking up fights between patients. A witness for the investigation stated that the administration was aware of the violence and threats, but did nothing to improve the effectiveness of its ineffective workplace violence program or to increase security for employees. The medical center was found to have committed willful violation of OSHA workplace safety regulation and fined $78,000. College At Oneonta For My Masters - 774 Words
All of my experiences in life have lead me to apply to SUNY College at Oneonta for my Masters of Science in Education. I have many goals, both professional and academic that are related to school counseling. All throughout school I had many inspirational school counselors that molded who I am today. This set me up for success in my college career. Upon entering college, I began to appreciate the importance of planning and organization in order to build the life I wanted for myself. While completing the application process for graduate school I realized that everything I had done over the years lead to this moment. I thoroughly enjoyed applying for schools, only because I had the confidence and motivation from my many mentors and counselors surrounding me. My friends would ask for my assistance everyday during their own educational planning and I knew I wanted to make a career out of it. During these experiences, I learned the importance of discovering a meaningful life path. This is the most important aspect I will instill in the students I work with on a daily basis. I was lucky enough to have an amazing counselor at my undergraduate college. Jennifer Rooney, Director of Career Development and Engagement at St. Josephââ¬â¢s College, provided me with amazing advice regarding school counseling. It offers tariff plans that are exclusively designed to cater to the communication needs of a diverse group of people, taking into account occasional users to businessmen. To achieve this objective, Mobilink offers both postpaid (Indigo) and the prepaid (JAZZ) solutions to its customers. In addition to providing advanced voice communication services, Mobilink also offers a number of value added services to its valued subscribers. Keeping in mind its customers convenience, Mobilink has also bundled mobile handsets, sold either independently or bundled in Get Set Go Pack. Mobilink GSM started operations in the year 1994, as a third entrant in the market, while Paktel and Instaphone were already operating since 1991 and had acquired substantial market penetration. Despite the re-launch of Ufone, the main competitor, Mobilink has maintained its momentum of growth. All this has been possible due to inter-departmental synergy and strengthening of Mobilinkââ¬â¢s brands. Till early 2001, they had a market share of 43%. OT took over management control of the company in April 2001 and changed the overall market dynamics through its aggressive marketing strategy and expertise. In less than two years time Mobilink grew by almost 400% with market leadership of 60% market share (year end 2003). At the time when it entered the market it was a small player in the cellular market of Pakistan it is now the market leader both in terms of growth as well as having the largest subscriber base in Pakistan. INDUSTRY ANALYSIS The Pakistani cellular industry comprises of 6 players: Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor, Warid Telecom, Zong (a brand of China Mobile Pakistan) and Instaphone, out of which, Instaphone has not maintained a prominent market position in the industry, and thus, has the lowest number of subscribers. As per the PTA findings as of June 2008, the number of subscribers for Mobilink is over 32 million customers (and has approximately 36. 39% of the market share). While Ufone and Telenor tie for second place with 21% market share, Warid Telecom has 17. 9% of the pie while Zong being the most recent has a share of 4. 4%. The price-sensitive industry faces tough competition from all players in the market, which is reflected by the marketing campaigns and by observing the past, thus making cellular services a highly elastic commodity. The market, however, is seen as very lucrative as there are only 6 operators who are providing services to just over half of Pakistanââ¬â¢s population ââ¬â the tele density figures are a little below 60%. At the same time, companies are investing in infrastructure and technology in order to serve the untapped markets. The PTA acts as a governing body for all telecommunication-related providers in the country, and has set different regulations which operators are bound to follow, to the extent that operators are required to obtain an approval from the PTA before launching a new product or service, thus giving the authority powers to control the competitiveness of the industry. Technology is constantly changing in the telecom sector. Recently, two other players entered the market with BlackBerry support, in order to counter Mobilinkââ¬â¢s domination. Moreover, as 3G licenses are expected to be awarded this year, it is expected that companies will invest in 3G and roll out services to users within one year. Moreover, as the telecom sector is witnessing rapid growth, represented by high revenues, companies are devising new tactics on attracting and targeting users and trying to increase the average revenue obtained per user. Firms compete on the basis of pricing, while quality of service is often overlooked. The telecom sector has faced a boom due to the continuous reduction in price, and the ability of network providers to continuously add customers to their user base. Due to this, companies gain momentum and size rapidly, and can are therefore able to provide more services. At the same time, these companies become cash-rich, and investment is an on-going process. Network coverage, subsidized SIM card rates, the ability to switch from one network to another while retaining the same number all have posed opportunities for different providers, but simultaneously, these are also challenges. The industryââ¬â¢s success is due to the large amounts of investment that takes place. The telecom sector takes a good chunk of the annual FDI, with investment running into millions of dollars. Evidently, these companies are making substantial amounts of profit, considering there is no bar on the amount of remittances companies are allowed to take to their home countriesââ¬â¢. The amount of money telecom companies utilize for investment and expansion purposes is sizable, thus providing an opportunity for financial institutions to offer their credit. From July 1 2008, the government announced in the budget that the telecom services in Pakistan will have a sales tax of 21% in place of the 15% that was charged before. This is a significant development in the telecom sectorââ¬â¢s story as the current telecom penetration rate is less than 60%, and this also poses a challenge to the growth rate as basic access to telecom services has been made more expensive for the consumers. It should be noted that there are other taxes such as the activation tax that is in place for each connection sold (amounting to Rs. 00 per connection or SIM card), which is already being sold at a subsidized rate by the operators. Moreover, the cellular companies and the main fixed-line operator in the country moved a petition to abolish the USF (Universal Service Fund) Access Promotion Charge in order to maximize their revenues. Currently, companies are already fulfilling the basic requirement of 1. 5% of total revenues, and consider the APC as detrimental to their revenues. Only recently has a proposal been sent to the Ministry of IT and Telecom to remove the APC. MARKET SHARE PEST ANALYSIS POLITICAL: Considering the current politically instable condition in Pakistan, the telecom sector of Pakistan is not doing too badly. The sector was by far the largest recipient of foreign direct investment in 2007-08. As per PTA, the industry continues to add more than 3 million new mobile subscribers every month even under the current conditions. Although the frequently changing government does bring very frequent changes in the laws and regulations, this does not however stop the number of users from increasing. ECONOMIC: Around the globe thereââ¬â¢s a recessive economy prevailing. There is an increase in the interest rates and the slump in the economy world over doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be coming to an end. Pakistan is no exception to this recession. Due to inflation, price of every product/service is sky rocketing. Apart from that the increase in federal excise duty on telecommunication services from 15 percent to 21 percent has adversely impacted the usage of mobile phone and has resulted in reduction in service usage by 8 percent to 9 percent within few weeks of the previous fiscal year. Unfair taxation would lead to burdening the new potential rural consumers who do not have access to mobile phone facility hampering the development of the rural economy. The growth in the telecommunication sector during last 4 years was recorded 100 percent due to its expanding consumer base(Daily Times, July 7, 2008). However, the burden of taxes and duties is going to reduce the usage by the consumers resulting in fewer revenues for the government and reduced operations by the companies. SOCIAL: Cellular revolution has taken Pakistan by storm. The mobile density in Pakistan is reaching 56% (Babar Bhatti, August 31, 2008). Mobile phones are increasingly being used as a social tool across the globe. Pakistani cellular companies are also trying to catch on with this growing ââ¬Ëcellular activismââ¬â¢ frenzy. Itââ¬â¢s true that cellular companies have limited scope of action as far as brining social change is concerned still almost all the mobile companies of Pakistan are doing some kind of social uplift projects. Telenor, for instance, has launched a farmersââ¬â¢ uplift scheme TeleKisan besides the apna PCO and other schemes. Similarly, other cellular companies are also conducting some activities in the avenues of social uplift. Corporate sector too has a major role to play. Instead of simply doling out a few millions in charity, local corporate giants, along with the multinational conglomerates, should come forward with new ideas of using cellular technology for poverty alleviation. TECHNOLOGICAL: Due to the current economic recession, the technology required to expand is difficult to gain. And therefore, Pakistan needs to increase telecom research and development work within the country. China and India are in the process of becoming world major Ramp;D centers for technology and telecommunication. Two top Chinese telecom equipment firms have announced their plans to collaborate with Pakistan: Huawei is working with UET Lahore and ZTE will setup Ramp;D center in Islamabad. The goal of the policy makers should be to increase the rate of transfer of technology from abroad, broaden the pool of local skilled workforce and accelerate the local production of telecom equipment and handset parts etc. PORTERââ¬â¢S FIVE FORCES 1. Threat of New Entrants is High. Since PTA has adopted liberal policies to create a foreign investment friendly environment the barriers to entry have significantly reduced. Deregulation has opened up a number of economic benefits in terms of huge foreign investment. Therefore threat of new entrants is considered high because it is easier for foreign giants to come and enter the market. 2. Power of Suppliers is Low. At first glance, it might look like telecom equipment suppliers have considerable bargaining power over telecom operators. Indeed, without the high fiber optic technology required, the companies canââ¬â¢t operate. But there are actually a number of large equipment makers around. There are enough vendors, arguably, to dilute bargaining power. Thus the power of suppliers is low. . Bargaining Power of Buyersà is High. With the increased choice of telecom products and services that are available to customers due to the numerous telecom service providers, the bargaining power of buyers is high. Also because the switching cost from one service provider to another is very low, the buyer can always switch. 4. Threat of Substitutes is Medium. Pro ducts and services from non-traditional telecom industries pose seriousà substitution threats. PTCLââ¬â¢s scheme to make all national calls toll free attracted a lot of attention and was able to divert traffic from mobile usage to increased landline usage. . Competitive Rivalry is High. Competition is cut throat. The wave of industry deregulation paved the way for a rush of new entrants. New technology is prompting a wave of substitute services. All players in this competitive market are thus forced to offer new and exciting services at lower prices. This tends to drive industry profitability down. BCG MATRIX Mobilink Jazz has been through the cycle and now enjoys the position as a cash cow as compared to its competitors. It needs to bring down its rates to grow further in the market and back to its position as a star which it once ruled. POSITIONING MAP The above positioning map shows the relative positions of the major players of the telecom industry on a scale that measures price affordability on the x-axis and Value Added Services (VAS) attractiveness on the y-axis. It can be observed that Ufone is leading by a clear majority in the telecom sector with Telenor and Zong following price affordability. While Mobilink is better in VAS attractiveness compared to majority of its competitors, however it is considered comparatively more expensive. Warid lags behind in both price affordability in comparison to its competitors and VAS attractiveness. Product / Services Mobilink being the market leader enjoys major share of the overall market with both Indigo and Jazz dominating the postpaid and prepaid segments respectively Mobilink deals with postpaid Indigo and prepaid (Jazz) packages. JAZZ Addressing the press conference, Graham Burke, president Pakistan Mobilink Corporation Limited said that with the prepaid card a customer could control its cost with the freedom to use. This is when Jazz was first launched in Pakistan, and with the passage of time became very popular, especially among the young lot. Jazz, is based on an intelligent network which is the most advanced and expensive platform, presently available in cellular telephone technology. Scores of facilities available in the package will cater to the communication needs of thousands of people in the country who cannot afford a post paid mobile phone connection. Jazz is an amazing prepaid service that allows customer freedom from monthly bills and gives him/her complete control over his/her cellular expenditure. Customer decides in advance when and how much he/she wants to spend. Jazz is simple, easy and loads of fun. Jazz is extremely affordable, with features like: * No daily charges * Low outgoing rates * 180 days validity of Jazz Scratch Cards * Simply reactivate deactivated Jazz connection Jazz-Aur Sunao Jazz tariffs have been reduced from Rs. 4. 75 per minute to Rs. 3. 50 per minute on all calls from Jazz to any other Mobilink numbers. This tariff reduction will serve as an unparalleled advantage to the largest mobile community in Pakistan, who will now have to pay less to call within the Mobilink family, 24 hours a day. Jazz Member get Member The Jazz Member get Member promo is the first of its kind where Mobilink will be giving itââ¬â¢s customers an opportunity to become the brandââ¬â¢s ambassadors and at the same time earn some free airtime. The essence of the campaign is that an Existing Jazz customer can refer up to 4 new customers and earn Rs. 400 in airtime. The new Jazz customer will also get Rs. 100 free airtime.
